EYE INDEX SET TO LEAD EXPANSION OF RX WRAP-AROUND SUNGLASS LENS MARKET

Major Investment in Surfacing Technology

Specialist surfacing and glazing laboratory, Eye Index, has opened a purpose-designed lens surfacing laboratory at its St Ives headquarters in Cambridgeshire. With the latest CNC controlled technology and separate hard coating and tinting units, the Company is poised to build on its successful launch into the Base 8 market three years ago.

The main function of the new lab will be the manufacture of polycarbonate prescription tinted and mirrored lenses up to Base 8 curvature for sports and fashion wrap-around sunglass eyewear.

Eye Index Director, Tony Harris, said that the installation of surfacing plant for Base 8 was a logical step.

"With specialist glazing already in place for this type of product and demand growing rapidly, introducing surfacing capacity allows us to complete the package for our customers - effectively a one-stop-shop. Technical surfacing skills are already available to us from our existing team," said Mr Harris.

The opening of the new laboratory will make Eye Index one of the leading prescription houses in the UK for the manufacture of polycarbonate Base 8 prescription lenses, and help them remain one of the industry pioneers in this specialist type of prescription work.
